Newbie here

Hi All,

I am new here and thought I would introduce myself. I am Al Brooks, 44 years old, been managing Type 2 diabetes since my 30s. About a year ago I had VSG surgery, was able to come off all diabetes medications for about six months while still monitoring my blood sugar levels closely. Before surgery, I had tried different medications to manage my diabetes, and I have been doing A1C tests every 3-4 months to track my progress.

Now I'm focused on maintaining stable blood sugar through lifestyle changes. I try to maintain good sleep hygiene, eat low carb, etc. Sometimes I cave to my comfort foods like pasta or pizza but I am trying to be consistent with my efforts. I was curious about how other people manage their post surgery and long term goals of managing the diabetes as well as transitioning off medications.

I would love to hear more from you guys!

Thanks!
Al

  1. Hi ! Welcome to the community! I moderate in our type 2 diabetes community as well and I think I've seen your posts there. You've been super supportive. I'm thrilled you joined this community as well. Are you happy you had the VSG surgery? How awesome that you are now off all type 2 diabetes medications. That is a huge accomplishment. I hope you get some responses from others who have had vertical sleeve gastrectomy. This is a relatively new community, so it might be a while before you hear from others, but I hope you stick with us. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah, I'm definitely happy I had the VSG, it was a game changer for me. Being off the meds for those six months was incredible, though I'm back on some now as my body has adjusted. Still totally worth it though.

I appreciate you letting me know this is a newer community. I'll definitely stick around and hopefully we can build up a good group here. Always helps to connect with people who get what we're going through.

    2. I'm thrilled it was so successful for you. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease, so it's hard to entirely avoid medication, but you are probably avoiding major complications by losing weight and keeping your number down. Here is a forum post from another new member who is hoping to connect with people who also have diabetes: https://obesity.net/forums/hi-everyone. I thought it might interest you. Enjoy the evening! - Lori (Team Member)
