Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum and just wanted to introduce myself. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last month, and as you can imagine, it’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. My BMI is still high at 34 kg/m², and I know I have a long road ahead when it comes to both managing my weight and this new diagnosis.

Right now, I’m in that early phase, trying to take in all the information, make better choices, and not get overwhelmed. I’m very aware that this is just the beginning of my diabetes journey, and there’s still so much more I need to learn and do to get things under control.

I joined this forum hoping to connect with others who understand what it’s like to navigate both obesity and diabetes at the same time. I’m looking forward to learning from your experiences, sharing my own along the way, and hopefully building some accountability and support.

Thanks for having me here.

  1. Welcome to the community, ! We have several people here who are contending with both. I hope they see this post and chime in. Some also belong to our sister community,Type2Diabetes.com, where I moderate as well. You'll find lots of great support and information there, too. If you don't mind me asking, how high was your A1C? Has your doctor put you on any medications, or are you trying to lose weight and make lifestyle changes first? A new diagnosis can be really overwhelming, so it can be helpful to make only the changes you can handle at first. Sending the best of all wishes your way. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. My A1C came back at 7.6. Right now, my doctor wants me to focus on lifestyle changes first, mainly improving my eating habits and increasing my activity before deciding on medication. It’s definitely overwhelming, but I joined this forum hoping to connect with others who understand what it’s like to manage both obesity and diabetes at the same time.

    2. I willing to bet you can do it. Here is an article from our diabetes community that discusses the plate method: https://type2diabetes.com/nutrition/meal-planning-pro. It is probably the most convenient way to make effective changes in diet. A few other things that can help with bot A1C and weight loss are 15 minutes of exercise after each meal (walking, weights, anything really) and eliminating drinks that contain sugar. You've got this and we're here for you! - Lori (Team Member)
