Combatting the US obesity epidemic. What would actually work?

I am "weighing in" on this. I strongly believe the only strategy that would actually work is for the US to stop selling obesity promoting foods and beverages such as fat and sugar laden processed foods, cookies, candies, meat products etc. and outlawing sugary soft drinks entirely. If these things were not readily available everywhere and cheap, and the populace could only buy healthy, unprocessed foods, then the US population average weights would drop dramatically in not too much time. Also, less screen time and more physical activity on a daily basis is to be encouraged, but won't work without the elimination of fat inducing foods! Also, restaurant food portions are way too large, and there is a lot of food waste in this country.

  1. Hi . I'm sure all those measures would do wonders for obesity rates in the US. It makes me angry to see companies making a fortune by dressing up sugar and sodium and pushing it as convenient, healthy, yummy food.
Unfortunately, we can't go back and change the past for those who are already obese and we need to remember that not all obesity is caused by our current food and social cultures. Some people have chronic illnesses that either cause weight gain or require medication that causes weight gain. Others suffer from disordered eating related to mental health issues, often due to past trauma. Others have suffered injuries that drastically changed their lifestyles, leaving them less active and, sometimes, depressed. Then there are those who are defined as obese by the medical community, but are happy and perfectly healthy.
People who are obese need support and acceptance to move forward in their lives and in their health journeys and that's what we are here for. We want to help people feel good about themselves no matter hat size they are, give them a place to vent among others who understand and support them as they figure out how to live more fully.
Are you obese? If so, do you ever feel judged or stigmatized or are you comfortable in your live and surrounded by supportive people? We're here for you, too.
Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
