Plateau Weight Loss Struggles

I lost 50 pound over about 18 months but for the 12 months I haven't really lost weight -- well, I've been gaining and losing the same 8 pounds! Some of it is me making poor choices but not all of it, it's like no matter what I was doing I couldn't get below a certain weight. But I also haven't gained back any of the 50 I lost so that's win.

The odd thing is, suddenly, after a year, I'm back to losing weight. I didn't make any major changes, although I've been better about not making poor choice they do still get made.

I'm assuming this is simply a plateau of sorts while my body adjusts to being 50 pounds lighter but it seems like a year is a really long time to stall in losing weight. I've lost upwards of 100 pound three different times in my life and I don't recall having such a long "lull" in the process before. Maybe it's age? Maybe it's the slow yo-yo of my weight over the decades? Any ideas or thoughts on this process?

  1. Hi . Congratulations on the weight loss! We are not medical experts, but, in my own experience, age makes a big difference. My metabolism is definitely much slower than it used to be. I also find that, as I age, life gets in the way of healthy eating, exercise and quality sleep more often.
Many weight loss experts say that our bodies adjust to our calorie intakes over time, slowing down when we eat less. If we don't do something to change that up, we stop losing weight. This article from Mayo Clinic discusses ways to restart weight loss: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/weight-loss-plateau/art-20044615. It is possible changes in your metabolism caused a plateau and that you recently incorporated any of those changes without realizing it? I hope others have input that helps.
Regardless, I'm glad you are losing weight again. Do you have much more to go?
Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
