Healthier Thanksgiving?

Are you trying to do anything to help keep your Thanksgiving menu healthy? I do the cooking so i'm able to make substitutions. My husband is more onboard this year because he needs to lose weight for heath reasons too. I'm cooking a turkey breast in the slow cooker, I'm making green bean casserole for me, but using low sodium cream of mushroom soup, and half the french fried onions the recipe calls for. I bought rolls but i'm able to pass on those. I'm not making apple pie this time because he wanted pumpkin. I like it but not as much so that will help. I also plan to go for a walk while the food is cooking.

  1. I'm not hosting this year, but I am bringing a side dish. I'm bringing a butternut squash dish from a recipe that I've used a million times. It's jam-packed with flavor and uses mostly healthy ingredients. Since the food situation will be out of my control, I'm going in with the game plan of enjoying the food there but being mindful with my portion control and really listening to my body when it says it's full and honoring that feeling. I'm definitely taking your advice and doing a long walk with my dog tomorrow in the afternoon. He's my motivation to get out there and get moving. Well, that and I'm looking forward to seeing the early birds who have put up Christmas decorations already. I love walking around my neighborhood and taking it in! I hope you both have a lovely and cozy Thanksgiving and !

    1. Those are all great strategies, ! Thanksgiving can really be challenging. I do all the cooking in our household as well, though some relatives also bring dishes. That gives me some control. I try to remind myself that some of the foods we love so much are more about comfort than taste. For instance, for me, mashed potatoes taste good because they are smothered in gravy, not because the potatoes themselves are so yummy. So, I put gravy on my turkey and avoid the mashed potatoes. I usually serve a few fresher veggies, like corn or green beans with almonds and orange peel, as alternative to the creamed veggies other bring as well. I skip dessert altogether because I know if I have a little, I'll want more. Walking after is a great idea. It will be dark and snowing when our meal is done, but I can always hop on the treadmill. I think I'l do that. Thanks for sharing what helps. Have a wonderful holiday! - Lori (Team Member)
