Relationship with food

I’m interested in hearing about how you relate to food in your daily life.

If you’re up for sharing, what’s your relationship with food like?

How do you feel about it, think about it and what role does it play for you?

How does it impact your routine?

  1. Lori, thank you for the kind words. I think and hope that I will fit right in. The posts and the people say that there is a lot of hope and teamwork. I have to say, there will be times when I have a fit if I don’t have my favorite Dynobytes chocolate cereal. I’m a chocoholic and Diet Coke is my drink of choice, however I do drink Aquafina water. With dry mouth etc I’m always thirsty and often have a sore mouth. I did have to have all teeth pulled and dentures. The lowers don’t stay in. Too often, dry cereal is all I eat, because I need that moisture. Oatmeal soupy isn’t good. Yes, I do Biotene rinse, Biotene oral spray and toothpaste.
Here is the start of getting serious about weight loss. Will get serious next week.
Day-by-day… Lori that sounds doable! And sometimes more. I’m anxious to learn.

    1. You have an awful lot of challenges, for sure. My father often had to eat without his dentures as well. It was always a struggle to find healthy foods he enjoyed. He liked soft sandwiches like tuna or egg salad and green beans from the can. The canned beans are high in sodium, but they are also soft and a bit cravable. Of course, ice cream was another favorite along with chocolate pudding. I really wish food could be more enjoyable for you. Day-by-day sounds like a good mantra to adopt, especially with the holidays coming up. We've got this, right? 😀 - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi Lori, it’s nice to see a familiar person! I love these communities as well. I gain more than I give.
Twins! I always wanted them. My 4 kept me busy enough in those earlier days.
It seems that on my roller coaster of life, my weight obliged.
It does help to have a support system. I’m not going to push too hard until after the 13th, then will focus more. One day at a time, that’s the only way.
My daughter is waiting, to teach me Canva.
I hope that you are having a good night.
    Janet

    1. You will love Canva, ! I use Book Brush, which is a bit more user-friendly and gear toward authors, but I also use Canva sometimes as well. Let me know what you think! - Lori (Team Member)

  3. Comfort food is what I reach for. It often includes chocolate, some fruit such as bananas or grapes, maybe a pear. Ice cream and cereal are good too. Chester’s chicken is the best! I take off the skin.

I am allergic to so many foods. I don’t drink. Because of dry mouth, the bone in my lower jaw is wearing down, so I can’t wear lower denture. The upper, I had resealed so I can usually wear that without glue. Sometimes though, it feels like I get a gag reflux from it, even though the dentist removed some of the back on the top denture. I can’t chew with top dentures only, because then I am biting into my lower gum. Hard things I can’t chew, even without the dentures, so I usually prefer soft foods so I can do without dentures. My favorite foods are: cereal, Chester’s Chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, applesauce, cucumbers cut small, cooked soft cauliflower with cheese, and cut green beans. Pizza, dissected lol, light to no sauce, watermelon, grapes and pears. Usually bread over toast. I don’t like to eat in front of people, sometimes I aspirate. If I just can’t chew, I might have to pull it out by fingers or spit into a napkin. I did lose weight with this before, I just need to measure. Desserts: No eggs or egg products, some nuts Quite a few no. I do have butterscotch hard candy or tootsie roll pops.

When I’m going through a rough time, like now, I had a mini Hershey bar and will have a banana as well.

I haven’t been measuring, that’s a big reason that I haven’t been losing. When things are tough, sometimes I don’t care how much I eat or snack.

When I get in a better place, I am more conscientious about what I’m eating.

Thank you for bringing this site to life, I think I will be very helpful. I will share if that’s ok. Also, I write/moderate for COPDnet..

    1. Hi ! It's great to see you here! We would love to hear more from you more often. I have seen how supportive and compassionate you are in our sister community, COPD.net. We are fortunate to have you as a heath leader in that community..
I am thrilled to see this community beginning to thrive as well. People think I gained weight because I had twins, but that wasn't it. It was a whole bunch of stressful life changes when they were four and my older kids were in elementary school topped with injuries and surgeries that all left me eating more and exercising less. It took years to put it all on and I have to accept that it might take years to take it all off. It feels good to share in a place where so many people get it.
I can see why it's hard for you to stay on any kind of eating plan. You have an awful lot of challenges that must impact your efforts both physically and emotionally every day. I hope you feel at home here and that you know no one here is going to judge you. Day-by-day. Sometimes, that's the best we can do. - Lori (Team Member)
